Strain

Strain is defined as when the relative position of particles is altered in a body due to externally applied loads.

Different Types of Strains

  1. Normal Strain
    1. Longitudinal Strain or Linear Strain  (Tensile Strain or Compressive Strain)
    2. Lateral Strain (Tensile Strain or Compressive Strain)
  2. Volumetric Strain
  3. Shear Strain
  1. Normal Strain : Normal Strain is defined as Change in dimension to original dimension.
    1. Longitudinal Strain or Linear Strain : The Strain induced in the direction of applied load is called as Longitudinal strain.
    2. Lateral Strain : The Strain  induced in the direction perpendicular to the applied load is called as Lateral strain.
  2. Volumetric Strain : The Change in volume to original volume is called as Volumetric strain.
  3. Shear Strain :When a body is subjected to two equal and opposite forces, acting tangentially across the resisting section, as a result of which the body tends to shear off the section, the strain induced in the body is called as shear strain.
